Coping Mechanism



Maybe you've just suffered from a miscarriage, or a divorce or have lost a loved one, or you are pretty anxious about your wedding day or your promotion or the labour day. Maybe you are angry at someone or you are annoyed or agitated because you did not get the promotion despite working day and night, but wait, for a moment did you even realise that all this is leading you towards a significant amount of stress. This can even drive you to towards stress or depression. That is why coping mechanisms are a vital part of human life. It is of significance as they navigate our paths through the dark times.


In simple words, Coping Mechanism is a tool that is used by people for stress management or to cope with anger, loneliness, trauma, anxiety, or depression, in their happy, sad, angry and lonely moments.


The coping mechanism is also effective in improving one's mental and emotional well being. During this covid time, a coping mechanism is a tool that is most effective in healing people mentally and emotionally.


There are many reasons which make a person's life stressful, full of anxiety etc. A recent study shows that the people who consume soft drinks, energy, drinks and caffeine in large quantities are the victims of serious mental problems. This may sound a bit weird but, indeed, compulsive spending is also one of the major reasons why people suffer from different mental disorders. Last but not least smoking also affects one's mental and emotional well being. The people who consume alcohol or alcoholic drinks at very frequent intervals are also on the edge of suffering from serious mental problems.


Now let's talk about the different types of coping mechanisms


  1. Support - Talking to a loved one or a supportive person about your problem is an effective way to manage your anxiety and stress levels. Seeking external help is much better than just merely isolating yourself in a room.

  2. Relaxation - Another very effective way to cope up with your mental illness is by relaxing. Yes, relaxation exercises like meditation, yoga, progressive muscle relaxation or other calming techniques, listening to the music of your choice, painting, drawing can definitely help.

  3. Humour - Laughing, Laughing and Laughing and maintaining a good sense of humour can cure a thousand problems in just a jiff.

  4. Physical activity - Physical activities, being physically active can also help you feel better. Engaging yourself in any physical activity like yoga, Zumba, aerobics, swimming, cycling etc.

So if you are experiencing some problems in your emotional and mental well being, then don't hesitate to talk. If you are not sure whom to talk to then don't waste much of your time and consult a therapist or other mental health professional. That professional will help you cope up during that time. Inner strength and willpower are instrumental in helping us to come out of adversities and for better function for the coping mechanism.
