People often misconceive that a woman is at the end of receiving or being a victim of any sexual violence at night. But here's the thing that women are not safe any time of the day. Because time doesn't matter. News and reports show that many sexual acts of violence even occur in the daytime.
The matter of curfew being imposed on women can be traced long back. Centuries ago also, women were required to stay at home during nighttime. Firstly so that they are protected from dangerous acts and also to ensure that they are not involved in some suspected behaviour. This notion slowly and steadily came to an end and became more acceptable in the west but is still intact in Indian society yet. India even adopted the notion that good and respectable women don't go out at night.
Even today if a woman is a victim of any sexual violence then politicians very openly that ask that what was the need to move out at night. Instead of making India a safe place, they answer by saying that she shouldn't have been alone at night. Their behaviour drastically changes because before they are elected they make vows about making cities safe for women but are changed once they actually win.
Many girls are escorted to colleges by their parents or their elder brothers to ensure their safety. Due to this girls cannot go for extra curriculum activities, they cannot go for road trips alone. People are willing to send their sons alone but when it is for their girls they nimbly turn it down asserting that it won't be safe.
A recent survey conducted in India showed that 50 per cent of parents who sent their daughter's to different cities to study sent them to the hostels which imposed curfews. This protocol is also obeyed in professional working areas and companies where women are prohibited from working late hours. Sometimes even parents intervene about not letting their daughters work late nights, especially after sunset. If a woman has to work out late at night then many conditions are imposed on them like being escorted by someone, dressing in a modest way etc.
But the actual truth is that women are not even safe in the daytime. It is not written in some books or article that sexual violence only happens at night time. Inside the home, in working areas, in educational institutions in public transport etc. If people are actually concerned about the safety of women then they would have done something to improve the status of society. Not just saying that is not safe for women to work, hang out or stroll at night.
Useless deadlines being imposed on college girls and working women should be lifted. Because no time is safe for women to wander around. So we cannot just lock women in their homes and keep them confined like birds in a cage. Alternatively, we should be practical and make the world a better place for women.
Yes make the world safe for us.... Don't lock is
